1. The perimeter moves inside

As of this writing, the state of Wi-Fi security is alarmingly weak, as measured by the survey conducted by Deloitte in Mumbai, one of the financial hubs.

News that came in soon after the terrorists' attacks in Ahmedabad and Delhi revealed that terrorists used unsecured Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) networks to send emails containing terror messages. The story is alarming to home wireless network users as well as to corporates.

It's a pity that despite having firewalls, UTMs, antiviruses, spam filters, and the works, organizations still fall prey to hackers. This is because there is no single standard available to protect each deployment, due to which some flaw always goes unnoticed. Then it's completely upto a hacker's skills on how quickly he can exploit it. The moral of the story therefore is that no network can be 100% secure. You need to go beyond hardening the security of your network. What you also need is a proper incident response management strategy.

Here are some excerpts from the interview of Mr.M Srinivas Rao, Co-founder and CEO of Aujas Networks. Aujas is a pure-play digital security services provider offering life-cycle security services such as Application Security, IT Risk Management, Identity Management and Vulnerability Management. Aujas was co-founded by Srinivasa Rao, Sameer Shelke and Manjula Sridhar in 2008. The company received seed funding of $3 million from IDG Ventures India.

Security Threats are hard to predict. For instance, as mobiles become smarter and more transactions are conducted over the mobile, mobile security will demand significant attention. It is extremely important to secure the network in this day and age. In an ideal condition, it is essential to tighten the network to the least traffic possible. The security measures include scrutinizing the network traffic (firewalls), segregating the services, turning off the non-essential services (FTP, Telnet etc.), having stringent access controls and setting right policies and procedures for users of the network.

New Delhi:15 September 2008: In the wake of the terror emails being sent from unsecured wireless fidelity (WiFi) networks, the government is examining the possibility of issuing new norms that will make it illegal to leave such internet connections open. The new norms may also put the onus on telcos and internet service providers (ISPs) who sell WiFi connections to educate their customers in keeping them secure.
